Celebrating 50 years of the International Energy Agency

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the International Energy Agency (IEA), an influential global organisation dedicated to energy security, sustainability, and innovation.

Originally founded in 1974 in response to the 1973 oil crisis, the IEA has evolved significantly over the past five decades while staying true to its core mission of ensuring reliable and affordable energy supplies.

While energy security remains at the heart of the IEA's work, the organisation now tackles a wide array of energy issues suited to the realities of the 21st century. Addressing climate change through decarbonisation strategies has become a major priority, alongside efforts to improve energy access, efficiency, investment, and innovation globally.

Major Milestones // 1977 - 2023

1977

World Energy Outlook

The release of the IEA’s inaugural World Energy Outlook marked a pivotal moment. This annual publication has since become the gold standard for long-term energy analysis and projections.

1981

Early involvement in sustainable energy

The IEA actively participated in the United Nations Conference on New and Renewable Sources of Energy in Nairobi, Kenya. This early engagement demonstrated commitment to sustainable energy efforts.

By 1989, they were contributing to the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, emphasising their role in addressing climate challenges.

1991

Swift response to global energy emergencies

During the 1991 Gulf War, the IEA took collective action to release emergency oil stocks, demonstrating agility in times of crisis.

In 2005, after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita disrupted oil infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico, they responded swiftly to global energy emergencies.

1993

Expanding scope

The IEA’s scope expanded to cover a diverse range of energy technologies. Notably, the Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technology Collaboration Partnership was formed in 1993.

1997

Embracing digital

Launch of the official IEA website, enhancing global reach and accessibility.

2005

Advisory role and partnerships

Since the mid-2000s, the IEA has played an increasingly prominent advisory role. Policy recommendations at the 2005 G8 Summit and partnership with the G20 Summit discussions on energy in 2009 showed influence.

2015

Recent years

In 2015, IEA ministers approved a modernisation strategy, aiming to “open the doors” and establish association membership. This strengthened ties with emerging and developing economies.

2021

Net Zero by 2050 roadmap

The landmark Net Zero by 2050 Roadmap is published. This comprehensive study outlines commitment to aligning the energy system with the 1.5°C global warming limit.

2023

International summit

In 2023, the IEA took a significant step by hosting its inaugural international summit dedicated to critical minerals and their pivotal role in advancing clean energy.
